AWS re:Invent 2017 Las Vegas

This week I was in Las Vegas to attend the Amazon Web Services technical conference called re:Invent. Without a doubt this was the largest conference I have ever attended. I have attended Microsoft's TechEd a few times and thought that was big but this was multiple times bigger. My first day I attempted to take the shuttle between casinos to try and go to different sessions and that was not something I ever wanted to do again. That night I changed my week's schedule to only attend sessions all in the same casino and to only choose sessions where I could get a confirmed seat. The shuttle trip was supposed to take 12 minutes and I was on the bus for over an hour. Here is a video of a line where people stood to get registered, I didn't record the entire thing but it was maybe another 40 seconds walking before I got to the end of it.

Day 2 I focused on events at the Venetian so here is a video walking towards the conference area.

If you have passed any AWS certification exams you also had access to the "certification lounge". I stopped by because I knew I would get some sort of SWAG which turned out to be a t-shirt but more importantly I was walking by and wanted to know what a lounge for Amazon even looked like.

If you are wondering what I mean by "session" it just means a big room where a speaker or speakers will give a presentation focused on a single topic. All of the talks I attended were great!

Each morning Amazon would have a keynote where they would announce a bunch of new services being released. Because there was 45,000 people attending not everyone could fit in a room so here is a room with "overflow" people where we could watch on a big screen.

I know what you might be thinking, yes I do work a lot but I did find a few minutes here and there to try and relax and have some fun. Monday night I lost $10 at the Mirage Sportsbook during Monday Night Football. This was pretty much the only gambling we did.

Thanks to my sister and mother-in-law they both helped watch our kids which allowed for my wife to come along. Another evening we took an Uber and went to Freemont street to walk around and people watch and I seen this restaurant. I didn't go in but I did walk up and step on the scale where you would need to prove your weight if you wanted to eat for free. That is where a homeless man told me I looked like John Elway. Mrs. Woodward thought that was hilarious. Homeless man wherever you are Thank you for the kind words!

Quick recap: The conference is big, possibly too big. To get value you need to plan ahead of time and think about what topics you want to learn about. My first day was perhaps not the most valuable but the rest of the week I was amazed at all the information that was presented. Another value add was if you had specific questions there were groups of people from Amazon that you could go and talk to and get all the clarification you need on any topic. Las Vegas isn't really my scene but if given the opportunity to go to re:Invent again I think I would like that.

Maybe someday I can speak there....I think I would like that better.
