Technology Idea to Help Prevent Shootings

I am not sure how to even start this post. I don't want to be involved in a big debate around guns or laws or anything like that. I do not believe this is the perfect solution. I do however think this idea could be part of the greater solution.

I thought of this idea one night when I was watching Silicon Valley. In this show they had an application that could detect if something was or was not a hot dog.

My idea is this: What if we could analyze pictures or video clips looking for guns. If a gun was detected we could then trigger a series of events?

In November I went to Amazon's cloud conference called reInvent. While I was there I went and talked to the teams that support AI (artificial intelligence) and Rekognition and it made me think what I want is possible today.

I believe if cameras were placed (as an example) at the entrance of a school we could continually be looking for a gun. We would determine what our accepted threshold would be - let's say 90% confidence. So if the technology looked at the picture and determined with 90%+ confidence that it seen a gun we could notify the teachers of the location, we could notify authorities, we could lock the doors, we could sound an alarm - we could do almost anything. This technology exists today. If we uploaded a million pictures of guns Rekognition could analyze all of those images in about a second and then trigger action. All of these actions could be carried out faster than any human could ever imagine. The technology claims to be able to watch a live video stream too.

Now what if I put a hand gun in my gym bag? Well in that case it wouldn't work which is why I said this isn't the perfect solution.

If I use the API and ask Amazon to return to me all the "labels" of things it finds in this picture you see they are pretty confident in what they find.

Labels returned:

        {
            "Name": "Gun",
            "Confidence": 99.16409301757812
        },
        {
            "Name": "Handgun",
            "Confidence": 99.16409301757812
        },
        {
            "Name": "Weapon",
            "Confidence": 99.16409301757812

        }

Looks rather promising!

Now when I tested this image you will see what it found.

PS: I took this image from my search results, I have no idea who these kids are.

Not as promising? What happened? This honestly is the part that confuses me as I don't believe the technology isn't there yet. I believe for some reason they are filtering out guns and weapons when humans are in the photograph. After many tests when a person is around instantly we have no idea what a gun is. In the image there is a picture frame on the wall and we are suggesting that it might be a computer monitor or even a television yet it doesn't see the guns at all.

I am disappointed in the results of my tests. I have to believe the technology is there.
